about glish.com

what is this site?

Glish.com is a website created by, maintained by, and featuring Eric Costello. I realize I am not much of a feature, but hey. Anyway, This is where I go to write. I write about my life, my work, my kids, my computers etc etc.

You will also find here some online experiments (I am a web developer), my resume (I am a web developer), some info about my company Schwa (where I work as a web developer), my bio (I am more than a web developer), and some other stuff too.

Oh yeah, I should probably mention that I am not a visual designer, so don't judge the look of this site too harshly. I am trying to provide you with a highly useable interface though, so judge me harshly there, and let me know what you think. Also, if you are interested in such things, you should know that I am doing this whole site without the aid of images (I mean images as design elements of course; there are some photographs and the like). "Why?" you ask. For fun.

Below is a FAQ

  1. What is glish.com?
Glish.com is a website created by, maintained by, and featuring Eric Costello. read more. . .

  2. But what is "glish" .com
Oh, oh, yeah, the name. Well I was kidding around w/ K. and I told her I was going to create a new language called "Glish" that was English but with all extraneous syllables removed. I have been annoying her with the word "prolly" ("probably") for years, and I explained that I was going to do for all of the English language what I had done for "probably": reduce it to only its essential syllables. So I bought the domain name and then decided to do this site with it instead. No reason. Oh, also, there is a scripting language called Glish, no relation.

  3. Why are you doing this site?
I am doing this site because I have a hankering. I have been building web sites since early 1996, when I bought my first computer. I have since then never had a personal website. I always thought it so vain. But then I started reading some web logs, kottke.org, Girl Hacker's Random Log, and some others, and I was inspired. Plus I have a friend C. who has been pushing me and others to get back into writing, and this seems like a good way for me to do that: I am already at my computer 12 hours a day, so pointing IE to Blogger and spitting out some thoughts is pretty easy, and pretty fun I am finding.

Also, this site gives me a place to try out new technologies and techniques, and it gives me a home for my experiments.

  4. Aren't there any other questions?
Not that I know of. Have you got one?
